Think carefully about the initial location of your village, because the available types of terrain can dramatically affect your play style and village development.

Terrain types affect three aspects of the game:

- Movement: You cannot move through water (deeper than one tile) or through mountains. Movement speed is decreased through floodplains, indicated by the corresponding debuff. You can also improve movement over terrain by building a good network of roads.
- Building: You cannot build most buildings in water, on mountains, or on floodplains. You can build an embankment over water.
- Farming: You cannot plant farms in water, on mountains, or in deserts. You can plant on other types of terrain, but with different efficiency (floodplains: 25% more crops, grass: standard, semi-dry grass: 25% less crops). Trees grow with equal efficiency on both lush and semi-dry grass.
